The far-reaching philanthropy of Ernest and Evelyn Rady has helped shape the foundation of San Diego, most notably in healthcare, education and the arts.
Among their most recent contributions is a significant boost to healthcare: a $75 million gift to Scripps Health for the new, state-of-the-art tower at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, which has now been renamed the Rady Tower in their honor.
Ernest Rady, whose father was a prominent physician in their native Manitoba, Canada, says supporting quality healthcare in the San Diego community has always been a priority.
Inside Rady Tower: designed for healing
The eight-story Rady Tower, which opened last year, features comprehensive mother-baby services, operating rooms equipped with advanced technology, private patient rooms and an environment specifically designed to promote healing while also fostering greater efficiency among staff members and employees. The design was driven by evidence-based principles and shaped with input from physicians, nurses, Scripps leadership, architects and support staff.

Philanthropy expands Scripps La Jolla
The Rady Tower is part of the visionary Here for Good Campaign that has transformed Scripps La Jolla into the region’s premier medical center. Earlier additions included the Rady Tower’s neighbor, the Prebys Cardiovascular Institute, plus the Scripps Clinic John R. Anderson V Medical Pavilion, a centralized energy plant and a five-floor parking structure. Plans for its next phase include the construction of a third multi-story tower on the campus that will combine the expertise and services of both Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla and Scripps Green Hospital.
“The support we receive from the community helps Scripps deliver world-class care to every patient who comes to us,” says John Engle, Scripps corporate senior vice president and chief development officer. “It is essential that our hospitals grow with our communities, and generous donations like this one from the Radys will ensure that continues for decades to come.”
