Donors Shape Future of Scripps Encinitas

Gerry and Jeannie Ranglas

When the Lusardi Tower opens at Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas, Gerry and Jeannie Ranglas’ legacy will shape how countless families celebrate some of their most joyous moments and face some of their most difficult.

The prominent North County philanthropists made a significant contribution to name both the Jeannie and Gerry Ranglas Birth Pavilion and the Gerry and Jeannie Ranglas Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Their gift, one of the largest in the hospital’s history, reflects their deep commitment to health care in North County.

“Community is important to us, and Scripps Encinitas serves so many families in the community,” says Jeannie. “Gerry and I wanted to invest in something that will have a lasting and meaningful impact.”

A legacy gift expanding care at Scripps Encinitas

Gerry, a successful real estate investor who emigrated from Greece at age 6, credits the opportunities of the “American Dream” that have allowed him to give back to Scripps.

Longtime Scripps patients and supporters, the Ranglases had planned to support the Scripps Encinitas expansion; a health scare Gerry experienced in 2024 affirmed their decision.

“After I came home from my hospital visit, I reflected on the experience and it made me appreciate my recovery even more,” Gerry says. “We started thinking more about giving back, as that is what life is all about, receiving and giving. And when you give, we’ve found that it comes back many times over.”

“When you support something that aligns with your values, whether it’s health care, education, children or community, your gift becomes more than financial support. It’s an expression of who we are and who we want others to be. This gift is an expression of our gratitude for the blessings in our lives.”  — Jeannie Ranglas

Supporting mothers, babies and families

The Ranglases’ support for the birth pavilion at Scripps Encinitas was sparked by Jeannie’s love of children and a belief that family is the foundation of a community. It has recently taken on a special meaning. The couple’s third grandchild will be born there this summer.

“Childbirth represents hope, renewal and a promise for the future — the birth pavilion is where new stories begin,” she says. “If we can create an environment of comfort, excellence and compassion for mothers, babies and families, then we’re truly invested in generations to come forever.”

She adds, “We believe that every mother, including our daughter-in-law, deserves to feel supported and safe. Every baby deserves to be welcomed into the world with the highest standard of Scripps care, and each family deserves a space filled with dignity and peace during this beautiful moment. It’s a very special place for us.”

Strengthening North County through giving

The Ranglases are dedicated to supporting a variety of causes, including higher education, their church and arts institutions. Their generous contributions to Scripps Encinitas reflect their commitment to strengthening the health of the North County community for future generations.

“North San Diego County is one of the best places to live and prosper in the entire nation. It’s a growing area that will attract more people and Scripps will be essential to the well-being of a growing population,” says Gerry.

The Ranglases say that having their names associated with Scripps Encinitas is a point of pride. They hope that someday their grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren, will see it and feel the same sense of pride and civic responsibility.

“When you support something that aligns with your values, whether it’s health care, education, children or community, your gift becomes more than financial support. It’s an expression of who we are and who we want others to be,” says Jeannie. “This gift is an expression of our gratitude for the blessings in our lives.”
