Barbara Smith honors husband with gift to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla

Barbara Smith
Barbara Smith has been one of Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla’s most diligent supporters for more than two decades. Barbara and her late husband, William Smith, moved from Chicago to San Diego 35 years ago and became Scripps patients shortly after.
Over the years, both were treated for cancer, orthopedic injuries and other medical care, and though William ultimately lost his battle with cancer, Barbara’s connection to the hospital only grew stronger.
“I started to contribute because of the wonderful care provided by my doctors,” Barbara says. “Their dedication inspired me to give back, and it’s because of them I have continued to support Scripps for so many years.”
Giving back through philanthropy
Barbara has donated to the Prebys Cardiovascular Institute and Scripps Cancer Center, and toward the construction of Scripps Clinic’s John R. Anderson V Medical Pavilion. She’s a member of the President’s Council, which supports Scripps’ greatest needs.
She also gives back in other ways. Barbara has worked as a volunteer at the Scripps La Jolla gift shop, participated in the pet therapy program and has even knitted baby caps for Scripps’ youngest patients.
“I’ve always loved to meet people, and volunteering gave me the opportunity to meet so many interesting people and offer support at different times in their lives,” she says.

Honoring a loved one’s legacy
The construction of a new hospital tower at Scripps La Jolla gave Barbara another way to help. She made a legacy donation to name the William W. and Barbara Smith Cafeteria on the first floor. Her donation was part of an estate gift she was able to make in part now so she can see the impact of her generosity.
“I truly believe that this would have made my husband happy, and it gives me a sense of joy to know that I’m honoring his memory in this way,” she says. “I was able to make a difference — even if it’s just a tiny one. Every little bit counts.”
